“One scene. One Room.”: Thieves (2012)

How do you make a film set in a dense cyberpunk world on a tiny budget?

This short, Thieves, from 2012 should give you a few ideas. Their tagline, “One scene. One Room.” sums up the film nicely: it’s basically just a single, three-player interrogation scene with a sudden twist at the end and a lot of unanswered questions.

But for a twelve minute film you really don’t expect much more.

It does come with the feeling that we are getting a glimpse of a much larger world: Writer/Director J.G. Barnes had dreams of turning this short into a feature film and perhaps even a much larger project.

Sadly, nothing seems to have come of that.

However, it is still an impressive effort, with a good performance from Sheldon Simmons in the lead, and yet another reminder that imagination, shrewd use of resources and an interesting script can overcome a limited budget…
